Hi, to you people who obviously have nothing better to do but to read this post….well I am def going to keep it short and sweet. You may wonder why my son Richard of 18 and I are going to participate in such a gruelling experience i.e. to cycle from Lands End to John O Groats, fully laden with tent, sleeping bags and survival gear. We wish to raise money for Air Ambulance, the second reason is because we need a break from the gruelling backpacking trips around the alps, whereby quite often Rich has woken up in the morning with a sigh of relief and uttered ‘ mum we’ve survived another day”, or ‘we are still alive’! after suffering rock falls, being chased by wild animals, hanging on knife edge mountain ridges with extremely large backpacks, sitting on rucksacks to survive electrical storms, sitting out blizzards in a survival shelter etc etc. So I though a change would be refreshing…and of course the main reason is to keep those ambulances flying – as people like us…really need them! Who needs holidays anyway!! I would appreciate very much that when I get back to work…..I am not asked any difficult work related questions…when I have been out in the sticks for a bit I can sometimes find it difficult to even write my name…so give me a few days to acclimatise. Anyway wish us luck and hopefully we can keep you posted where we have reached each day…you guys def need a life….!
We intend to commence this ride on 23 August. The journey will be 1000 miles and we will be aiming to do 50 miles per day, fully laden with camping gear. I will be texting my oldest son our whereabouts each day, so if you are really bored with nothing better to do you can check where we have reached. We also wish to point out that if anyone wishes to make a donation on here through the Paypal option it is definitely safe and secure to do so.
Any way feel free to leave a comment and wish us luck. Carol and Richard
Good luck Carol & Richard …. i know you can do it !!
So you are cycling from Land’s End to JOG’s and not the other way around?!!
Are you going to give details of your route?
Hey Carol where is the sponsorship/donation form on here ??
All the best
Derek
Hi Derek
We have decided to go uphill all the way as we do not want it too easy. By the way we have only got a 1 man tent to share….glad I only snore at altitude…
Air Ambulance details will be appearing shortly.
Will post some details of route, but sticking to B Roads as last time I got on the M54 to Wales – Junction 6 to 7 on pushbike with a friend, we were nearly arrested by some men in blue, they advised us not to cycle back that way otherwise they would be very upset. But due to my severe injuries they let us off i.e. I did a double backflip followed by a belly flop over my handlebars, one minute I was riding my bike, and next it was riding me, I was black n blue and all my bananas in my Sainsbury’s bag attached to my handle bars got mashed to a pulp. My friend gave me 10 out of 10 for star quality and style which I thought was quite generous at the time, but was very reluctant to give an action replay.
See yah on a mountain soon..
Here’s to another adventure!
Wishing you all the best for this Carol, and to Richard of course – make sure you keep
making regular updates on you progress so we can all keep an eye on you!
Mike
Cheers Mike, well you will be able to keep track of us because we will be texting our Tech people (Keith and Meghan) each day and they will keep this site updated as to where we are….probably the emergency unit in some hospital…..
Carol and Rich
Good Luck Carol and Richard the crazy pair from Perton.
Hope all goes well and you raise plenty of money.
Oh Richard i hope you can keep up with the Old Un.
Craig.
Cheers Craig…Rich will manage to keep up as I will be attaching a towing rope, which is a change from a climbing rope.
In truth as Rich is young and fit, I will be apportioning the weight he is carrying to suit his speed…
Best of luck, a very difficult challenge, well it would be for me. I am sure you will be successful.
Thank you Marilyn. We will certainly try our hardest…as long as our bikes and bodies remain in one piece we should be successful.
You have my sympathies and understanding of what is involved – I did once in my far-off cycling days consider going for the record, but it would have had to be on one of those racing trikes as I was never fast enough on a bike. Commonsense – and climbing – intervened. I have to admit I feel much safer on a mountain than the roads nowadays despite actually having been hit by the lightning that had you sitting on your rucksack. The record route goes along the A49, about a mile from where I live. If you think it might be of use, I could PM you my phone number in case you hit a problem in Cheshire, although I might not be here in early September. Keep applying the cream!
Good luck with the ride, haven’t seen the route but if you’re passing through, or near to, South Yorkshire, let me know and I’ll come and wave mi flag at the side of the road.
I wish I only snored at altitude
Just keep your bottoms high and your legs going round and round and you should still be able to smile at the end.
Kevin
Hi Carol and Richard,
Well the great day of departure is getting very close, hope you are both feeling fit and raring to go!! I still think you’re both mad but also absolutely amazing. Good luck and I look forward to seeing you both when you get back home.
Ron, Thanks for the offer and we will bear it in mind, it is extremely kind of you. The route we have chosen is mainly away from A Roads. I will be indicating a route in my next post.
Kath thanks for the compliment. You will not recognise us when we get back as we will have legs like Arnold Swartz wots his name? and a strange stance…
Kevin
On the way past can you throw us the following:- Pain Killers, Sudocream, water, deodorant, bandages, and a few sandwiches (tuna & beetroot for me & chicken salad for Rich)…
Hi Carol & Richard Wishing you the best of luck you will need it. Love John & Pat. xxx
Well done, I still think you are both nuts.
All the best, Rob.
