THANK YOU ALL

Firstly both Richard and I would like to thank you all for the welcome comments during our cycle ride, they certainly helped to drive us forward.

Secondly we would like to thank everyone who have offered a donation and indeed for the donations already received.  Once all donations are received we will let you know the total amount collected.

The Good Bits were – visiting places we would never ever have likely to have seen in a lifetime; no punctures on either bike; when the rain stopped; tail winds; breakfast i.e. cake and coffee; lack of things to worry about other than getting through each day unscathed; the horizontal position each night; bus shelters; drying rooms; getting to the top of extremely large hills; finding a supermarket; finding a campsite with decent facilities; putting on dry socks and clothing; wild camping; the achievement of completing the cycle ride and the satisfaction of doing something good for a very worthy cause; the support of everyone.

The Bad Bits were – trying to cycle up very steep hills with a headwind, rain and jellyfied legs; rain; wind; insect bites; discourteous drivers; being splashed by vehicles; floods; cycling in the rain with slick tyres (very slippy); falling off bikes; putting up a soggy tent in rain; wearing cold wet socks in the morning; being blown off bikes into hedges.

A Special Thank you to Richard from me – for his sheer tenacity; his great map reading skills throughout; his motivation when the chips were down; putting up the tent each night in the pouring rain; carrying the bulk of the weight, and his constant hilarious impressions of Prince Charles, Borat, plus a multitude of other impressions, and his singing in every accent known to man, even in the pouring rain (sometimes I nearly fell off my bike through sheer laughter).

A Special Thank you also to Keith and Meghan for creating this Website and in keeping it updated each day when mobile phone signals allowed them to do so.

Finished!

They’ve finished! They completed the journey yesterday evening, taking seventeen days in total. Full details to follow late tonight.

Congratulations!

Update:

The final day involved strong winds, thankfully mostly in their favour. They reached 32 mph without pedalling at one point and were fighting against being pushed into ditches. They cycled 63.7 miles, bringing the full distance to 1029.3 miles. That’s an average of just over 60 miles per day over the 17 days.

Sadly, by the time Meghan and I got there to pick them up, it was already dark. We did get this picture of them crossing the finishing line though:

Quite artistic really.

Now that’s done, we’ll have to find out what they’re planning for their next challenge…

End of day sixteen

To start, here’s a picture of the lovely shower facilities at last night’s camp site.

Anyway, today was a significant improvement over the past week, with the rain holding off in the morning whilst they were packing up, and also on the evening when they were setting up. That’s the first time that’s happened since they started out.

They cycled 61.4 miles, stopping at Brora on the coast, and managed to find a camp site with decent facilities. Their total distance travelled is now 965.6 miles and they have about 65 miles to go.

Here are a few more pictures.

Days fourteen and fifteen

We have a veritable cornucopia of pictures today, starting with a few more from the thirteenth day.

This is a nice photo of their wild camp spot taken in the evening.

And here’s Carol keeping her energy up with a healthy snack.

And a strange, disembodied hand…

They had heavy rain again all night and into the next morning, which gave them a late start, but they decided to push for Fort William. They cycled 50.2 miles in torrential rain and reached the town late in the evening, cold and wet. On the plus side, they had a tail wind most of the day.

Reaching the highlands.

Eerie…

The fifteenth day was no better, weather-wise, with more downpours and grey skies. They headed along the A833 to Beauly via Loch Ness and Inverness, with the sun coming out a bit in the afternoon, and the rain starting again as they arrived at the camp site and started to pitch the tent. You can’t get more typically British than that…

Here’s a Scottish Loch.

And an action shot.

They covered 64.6 miles, giving them a current total of 904.2 miles to date. They have about another 120 miles to go and are expecting to finish Tuesday evening.

Keep your spirits up, nearly there now!

Days twelve and thirteen

Carol and Richard were subject to more torrential rain overnight on day eleven, which continued into the morning. They took a couple of pictures of them sheltering at a bus stop.

Is it just me or is she looking way too happy, given the situation? Here’s Richard in a more fitting photo…

They continued on their way after the rain subsided and had a tough morning with strong head winds. They then took a ferry across to Arran from Ardrossan to avoid main roads and take in a more scenic, but difficult route. Again, we’ve been treated to some photos now that they’ve figured out how to work the Blackberry:

They cycled 15 miles on Arran, with 600 feet of ascent, and rushed to catch the last ferry back across to Lochranza. Apparently, they saw four basking sharks during the crossing.

They ended day twelve two miles to the west of Skipness, and wild camped again, having covered only 46.3 miles in a very strenuous day.

Day thirteen was another grueller, with strong head winds and steep gradients all day. The weather flitted between sun and heavy showers, with some nice cycling around Loch Fyne and Loch Feochan. Carol and Richard’s favourite rest stops are bus shelters at the moment though.

They covered 63.4 miles on day thirteen, reaching Oban. That’s a total distance of 789.4 miles so far.

End of day eleven

Better day today with some sun and less rain. They’re wild camping in a wood near Cumnock having camouflaged the bikes. They also saw buzzards, red squirrels and deer en route.

70 miles today, bringing the total up to 679.7 miles.

End of day ten

Rainy again today with showers and some torrential downpours and storms. They’ve crossed into Scotland and are at a camp site in Annan near Gretna Green. At least they managed to get a three course meal last night!

They cycled 61 miles today; that’s 609.7 miles so far.

End of day nine

Another bad day. Quoting directly from a text message we received:

“Torrential rain. Reached Grasmere. Soaked to skin. No camp. Yha wanted 50 quid. Yha letting us dry clothes and wild camp in woods. Tent saturated. Floods.”

They covered 54 miles today. Let’s hope the weather improves for them soon.

548.7 miles so far.

End of day eight

They’ve gone through Liverpool, Warrington and Preston today in torrential rain. They’re wild camping at Garstang tonight, with their tent and gear soaked through. They covered 77.6 miles today, that’s 494.7 miles so far. Nearly half way!

End of day seven

Carol and Richard went over the Stiperstones early today and through Westbury, their nearest point to home. They then stopped at Knockin and sent us this priceless text message:

“At knockin. Having a coffee in the knockin shop. Head wind again. And rich is drooling over a pristine mitsubishi gto ’92 twin turbo”

They’re camping at Bulkeley in Cheshire between Nantwich and Wrexham, having completed 58 miles today. Total distance so far is 417.1 miles.

Also, we forgot to mention that we drove to Bridges youth hostel to meet them last night. For the most part, they seem to be coping well, although Carol is walking like she just got off a horse.
